En este trabajo —que no pretende ser exhaustivo— se aportan elementos para explicar qué ha pasado en la escena económica y política en Zimbabwe en los primeros treinta años de vida independiente (1980-2010), a fin de contribuir a la comprensión tanto de la crisis como de la compleja búsqueda de soluciones.
Como punto de partida se considera el hecho de que la historia de Zimbabwe es poco conocida, lo que dificulta comprender la crisis actual. El artículo inicia con una introducción que plantea, brevemente, los principales rasgos del periodo colonial. El estudio de los años comprendidos entre 1980 y 2010 está dividido en tres periodos históricos y, con fines explicativos, se subrayan en apartados separados el desarrollo de la esfera económica y el de la esfera política. El estudio concluye con un panorama general de la escena política entre abril de 2010 y julio de 2012.
