El artículo analiza las diversas fuentes que contribuyeron a la leyenda de Siddhārtha Gautama: las hagiografías independientes como el Lalitavistara o el Mahāvastu, el Buddhacarita de Aśvaghosa, el Udāna, que constituye la tercera sección del Khuddakanikāya y otros fragmentos de las colecciones canónicas de los nikaya, como Nidānakathā, las hagiografías incluidas en códigos monásticos, las colecciones de leyendas, cuentos y fábulas indias recopiladas en el género de las jātaka. Finalmente, se sintetizan algunas de las investigaciones recientes en torno de la fecha del Buda histórico.
