Resumen

Fundada entre las décadas de 1860 y 1870 como un conjunto de misiones, la Iglesia Presbiteriana de Taiwán en la actualidad puede considerarse la iglesia cristiana políticamente más activa en ese país. Su posicionamiento se hizo público a partir de la década de 1970 y se dirigió a defender no sólo los derechos humanos, sino también el derecho de autodeterminación de Taiwán y sus habitantes. Este artículo complejiza las narrativas que sostienen que los primeros antecedentes de la autodeterminación que esta iglesia defiende se encuentran en el espíritu de autonomía con el que se fundaron las misiones presbiterianas. Primero, se describe cómo dicha autonomía misional era parte de un plan general de evangelización entre iglesias misioneras protestantes y un instrumento para la consecución de teleologías de cristianización. Segundo, se aborda cómo esa autonomía se procuraba a través de una supervisión externa y estrategias operativas utilitaristas. Tercero, se exploran las otredades que eran producidas en las misiones y la función problemática pero positiva de esas otredades en la consecución de las teleologías de cristianización protestante. Al final se subraya la necesidad de más estudios que aborden las misiones cristianas en el este de Asia como sitios atravesados por dinámicas extrainstitucionales e intersubjetivas con contenido y matices gubernamentales.
