El texto examina la antigüedad del ñame en la región igbo del sudeste de Nigeria para demostrar que su domesticación es autóctona y se remonta a miles de años, incluso antes de la Edad del Hierro en África. A través de evidencia oral, etnográfica, lingüística y arqueológica, se desafía la idea de que la agricultura africana se originó principalmente por influencias externas. Se exploran además algunos mitos de origen que vinculan el ñame con la creación humana y la identidad igbo, así como tabúes y rituales que demuestran su profundo significado cultural y su centralidad en la economía y la sociedad.
