En los últimos años, las relaciones sino-latinoamericanas han cobrado una importancia estratégica creciente que superó las expectativas comerciales. No obstante, las investigaciones académicas a menudo ignoran las interacciones civiles en este ámbito. Hong Kong, como una Región Administrativa Especial con autoridad para conducir "asuntos externos", funciona como un canal diplomático "no oficial" o "guante blanco" para Beijing, especialmente en temas sensibles para China. Así, el artículo se enfoca en el papel de la empresa del magnate hongkonés Li Ka-shing en América Latina con el objetivo de analizar la posible contribución e influencia de sus inversiones en el desarrollo de las relaciones sino-latinoamericanas.
